26Kathryn Sawatzky

Aerobics Instructor

Kathryn has taught group fitness for over 20 years in Winnipeg at various health and fitness clubs throughout the city. Kathryn is certified with the Manitoba Fitness Council as a group fitness leader and with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology as a Certified Personal Trainer. Recently, Kathryn took her module 2 Group Yoga certification with Maureen Rae’s yoga studio. Kathryn’s passion for fitness and a healthy lifestyle is evident in her strong desire to ensure participants are performing exercises correctly to avoid injury and to reach their desired goals.

Erica Evans

Aerobics Instructor

Erica has been teaching fitness classes for 20 years. She is a member of the Manitoba Fitness council and is a certified BTS Group Step instructor. She has taught at numerous gyms, including Bodyworks, Image, and Shapes. She teaches a variety of classes including hi/lo, muscle up, core, step and circuit. Erica is also an avid runner, completing the Manitoba half marathon from 2008-2010.

As well as teaching fitness, Erica is a Certified Radiological Technologist at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Center.

Laurie Gilmore “DIVA”

Aerobics Instructor

Diva has been teaching group fitness and funk classes for over 14 years. Diva brings incredible energy to her workouts and is extremely motivating! This girl is hard core and loves to have fun. Outside of fitness, Diva is a full-time health care worker and a mother of one.

Debbie Haddad

Aerobics Instructor

Debbie Haddad is a certified fitness leader with the Manitoba Fitness Council, University of Manitoba. She is employed full time as a Policy Analyst and Business Manager with the Department of Justice. Debbie has 19 years experience as a fitness leader in group fitness and is a certified yoga instructor. Debbie teaches a wide range of fitness classes at several fitness centres, specifically, Image Fitness, Moving Parts Fitness and at the Urban Wellness Centre. Her fitness certification has afforded her the enjoyment and experience of teaching internationally and has left for short durations during our cold Canadian winters for teaching a variety of fitness classes in sunny Mexico.

Debbie’s personal fitness has seen her complete several half marathons over the last several years and and participated in other events including the yearly run with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Manitoba Special Olympics. She is an avid skier, golfer and cyclist.




April Klippenstein

Group Fitness Instructor

April has a passion for being active and helping others become active and achieve their health and wellness goals.  She is certified with the Manitoba Fitness Council in Group Resistance Training, as a Can-Fit Pro Personal Trainer and an Urban Poling Instructor.  April teaches fitness classes in workplaces, resistance and indoor cycling classes at the U of M and runs boot camps.  She is the owner of a fitness training company called Better U Fitness.  April has a passion for salsa dancing and in 2009/10 has performed in events including Salsa Sundays at the Forks, socials and a dance festival.  April has run six 1/2 marathons in 2008 – 2010 as well as completed an inline skate full marathon in August of 2010.

Denise Fann

Group Fitness Instructor/Part-time staff

Denise is a fitness professional who loves to help people achieve their goals. She has been involved in fitness in one way or another her entire life. She has competed in Gymnastics, Fitness Competitions, and even Marathons. With a background in Nutrition, Fitness Theory, Group Fitness and Resistance Training. She has the tools and experience to help others reach their own fitness goals, She is excited to help you find success.

Gillian Grodzik

Gillian has been studying yoga since 2001 and teaching yoga since 2010.  Her main studies are in Anusara Yoga, an uplifting, heart centered, alignment-based practice founded by John Friend and anchored here in Winnipeg by Lynn Lakusiak.  The vision of Anusara is one that says “yes!” to life.  Through the elegant alignment principles, each practitioner taps into and can bring forward their greatness within.  Gillian’s classes are always unique, with time at the beginning to quiet the mind, a sequence of yoga poses to open up the body, and relaxation at the end to please the heart.  Whether you are new to yoga or have been practicing for years, trust that when you step onto your mat you get exactly what you need in that moment.  Namaste!

Fitness Class Descriptions:

Level 1 Yoga: This class introduces the beginner to yoga poses and allows the intermediate Yogi to continue the base of their practice. This class incorporates sun salutations and standing poses to improve both your posture and flexibility. Please bring your own yoga mat to class.

Hard Core Circuit: Work your butt off in this 45 minute high intensity circuit focusing on functional training for everyday life! Cycle through stations spending a minute at each. This workout is for intermediate to advanced participants. Please take the first 5 minutes to warm up on a piece of cardio equipment.

Guts and Butts: Spend 45 minutes working on toning your middle and your butt… two areas of concern as we age! Fight gravity in this challenging workout that will keep you coming back for more… suitable for all levels of fitness.

Cardio Craze: Intermediate to advanced levels of fitness can take part in this hi/lo cardio workout that will leave you energized and ready to tackle your day. Includes abdominal and flexibility components.

Low Impact: Beginner to intermediate fitness levels can participate in this low impact class that will work to improve your fitness with great moves and music!

Core Power and Muscle Up: A full body resistance training workout that gets your metabolism revved up for maximum calorie burning! Open to all levels of fitness. Variety of equipment will be uses including hand weights, bosus, medicine and stability balls.

Fusion: The best of everything! Power cardio workout, core, resistance training and yoga stretching to finish things off.

BWR (Body Weight Resistance) Workout: Utilizing your own body weight creates a great functional workout that transfers to every day life. An awesome cardio and resistance training experience. Just bring yourself!

Boot Camp: A fast-paced workout of challenging drills to blast your cardio and muscular systems. Take your fitness to a new level and push yourself harder! Go for it!!

Bosu Blast: Take your fitness to the next level with plyometric, cardio and muscle toning on the bosu! A great workout for the athlete in you!

CrossFit Style Workout: Functional movements to challenge you and target your flexibility, strength, agility, speed and more! What a workout!

Extreme Fitness: High intensity training cycles of 20 seconds work and 10 seconds rest repeated without pause 8 times for a total of 4 minutes.  Core work performed between 6 sets of cycles.  Most intense workout on our schedule!!
